Grand Palace

Wat Arun

Cross the river on the 5-baht shuttle ferry from Tha Tien. Climb the porcelain-studded central prang, then recross for golden hour — the temple is best photographed from the opposite bank at sunset.

Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen

📍 Phasi Charoen, Thonburi

The 69-metre bronze Buddha rising over the rooftops of Thonburi, and the emerald-green glass stupa ceiling inside — far fewer tourists than the old town.

Longtail boat through the Thonburi khlongs

📍 Depart from Sathorn Pier / Wat Paknam area

Hire a longtail through the canal side of Bangkok that predates its roads — stilt houses, temple wharves, monitor lizards on the banks.

Talat Noi

The rusted-machine-shop quarter between the river and Chinatown — street art, century-old shophouses and the photogenic red Fiat carcass every photographer hunts for.

Wat Traimit

The 5.5-tonne solid-gold Buddha, hidden for two centuries under a plaster shell and rediscovered by accident in 1955.

Chinatown's main artery becomes one continuous open-air kitchen after dark — follow the queues: kuay jab pepper soup, grilled prawns, mango sticky rice, toast stalls.

Jim Thompson House

The teak house-museum of the American who rebuilt the Thai silk trade and then vanished in the Malaysian highlands in 1967. Guided tours run continuously.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

The city's spiral contemporary art hub — free entry, rotating Thai artists, and reliable air-conditioning at the hottest hour.

Lunch like an office worker: the 6th-floor food court does most of Thailand's greatest hits at street prices, one escalator ride from the malls.

Bangkok's central park — rent a pedal boat, and keep an eye out for the resident water monitor lizards, some nearly two metres long.

The pixelated skyscraper's 78th-floor glass tray, 310 m over Silom — time it for sunset and watch the city's grid light up.

Train from Hua Lamphong to Ayutthaya

Take the morning ordinary train north — about 90 minutes through the suburbs and rice country to the old capital. Third-class windows open all the way.

Wat Mahathat Ayutthaya

The sandstone Buddha head cradled in the roots of a banyan tree — the single most famous image of the ruined capital. Crouch when photographing it; your head must stay below the Buddha's.

Lung Lek Boat Noodles

The town's speciality is kuay tiao ruea — boat noodles in dark, rich broth, ordered by the stack of small bowls. Lung Lek is the queue worth joining.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram

The Khmer-style riverside temple built in 1630 — the grandest single ruin in Ayutthaya and the classic late-afternoon light.
