4-Day Hanoi Itinerary — Old Quarter, Ha Long Bay & Egg Coffee

Hoan Kiem Lake

📍 Hoan Kiem District

Start where Hanoi starts. Walk the full loop before the heat arrives — about 1.7km — past the red Huc Bridge and the Turtle Tower on its islet. On weekends the surrounding roads close to traffic entirely.

Ngoc Son Temple

📍 Hoan Kiem Lake

The temple on the lake's northern islet, reached over the red bridge. Inside sits a preserved giant softshell turtle from the lake itself — the animal behind the legend of the returned sword.

Cafe Giang

📍 39 Nguyen Huu Huan, Old Quarter

Egg coffee was invented here in 1946, when milk was scarce and whipped yolk replaced it. Order ca phe trung hot, take the upstairs room, and drink it before the foam collapses.

Bun Cha Huong Lien

📍 24 Le Van Huu, Hai Ba Trung

Grilled pork patties in a bowl of sweet-sour broth with cold noodles alongside. Famous since Obama and Anthony Bourdain ate here in 2016 — the table is now behind glass, but the bun cha is unchanged.

Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

📍 57B Dinh Tien Hoang

An 11th-century Red River Delta art form: lacquered puppets worked from behind a bamboo screen on a waist-deep pool, with a live band. Book ahead — the 50-minute shows sell out.

Ta Hien Street

📍 Old Quarter

The beer corner. Plastic stools on the pavement, bia hoi poured fresh at a few thousand dong a glass, and the street closes to traffic in the evenings.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

📍 Ba Dinh Square

Go early — it closes to visitors around 11:00 and shuts entirely for maintenance most of September and October. Long trousers, covered shoulders, no photographs inside, and no stopping in the chamber.

One Pillar Pagoda

📍 Ba Dinh

A single stone pillar carrying a small wooden shrine shaped like a lotus rising from the water. Founded in 1049; the French destroyed it in 1954 and it was rebuilt immediately after.

Presidential Palace Historical Site

📍 1 Hoang Hoa Tham, Ba Dinh

The mustard-yellow colonial palace Ho Chi Minh refused to live in, and the two-room stilt house behind it where he lived instead, beside a carp pond. The contrast is the whole point of the visit.

Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

📍 19C Hoang Dieu

A UNESCO site layered over 1,300 years of power. Don't miss House D67, the concrete command bunker where the North's generals ran the war — the maps and rotary phones are still on the table.

Temple of Literature

📍 58 Quoc Tu Giam, Dong Da

Vietnam's first university, founded 1070. The 82 stone stelae on turtle backs carry the names of doctoral graduates from 1442 onward — the reason this courtyard is on the 100,000 dong note.

Tran Quoc Pagoda

📍 West Lake, Thanh Nien Road

The oldest pagoda in Hanoi, over 1,500 years old, on a causeway islet in West Lake. Time it for sunset — the red stupa against the water is the shot everyone comes for.

Tuan Chau Marina

📍 Tuan Chau Island, Ha Long

The main departure port for day cruises, about 2.5 hours from Hanoi on the expressway. Day boats sail roughly 10:30 and return mid-afternoon — pre-book, and check the boat is licensed for the day route.

Thien Cung Cave

📍 Dau Go Island, Ha Long Bay

Heavenly Palace Cave — three big chambers of stalactites lit theatrically in colour. A steep set of steps up from the jetty, then a level walk through. The Dau Go cave, where Tran Hung Dao is said to have stored the stakes that sank the Mongol fleet, is on the same island.

Ti Top Island

📍 Ha Long Bay

Named after the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited in 1962. Climb the 400-odd steps to the viewpoint for the postcard shot over the bay, then swim off the crescent beach.

Luon Cave

📍 Bo Hon Island, Ha Long Bay

A low natural archway you pass through by bamboo rowing boat or kayak into an enclosed lagoon ringed by cliffs. Golden langurs live on the walls above — look up. Most day boats pair this with the much larger Sung Sot cave a short hop around the same island, and finish at the Cua Van floating village on the way back.

Hoa Lo Prison

📍 1 Hoa Lo, Hoan Kiem

Built by the French in 1896, later the 'Hanoi Hilton' that held American pilots including John McCain. The colonial-era sections — the guillotine room, the shackled communal cells — are the harder and more honest half.

Vietnamese Women's Museum

📍 36 Ly Thuong Kiet

Consistently the best-curated museum in the city. Three floors on marriage customs, ethnic-minority dress and the women who ran supply lines during the war — with the street-vendor exhibition on the ground floor.

St Joseph's Cathedral

📍 40 Nha Chung, Hoan Kiem

An 1886 neo-Gothic cathedral, deliberately modelled on Notre-Dame and left deliberately weather-stained. The cafes on Nha Tho street opposite are the reason to linger.

Hanoi Opera House

📍 1 Trang Tien

A 1911 copy of the Palais Garnier and the architectural anchor of the French Quarter. The interior only opens for performances and occasional tours — check the schedule before you plan on getting inside.

Vietnam National Museum of History

📍 216 Tran Quang Khai

Housed in the 1932 Indochinese-style former Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient. Dong Son bronze drums, Champa sculpture and the Bach Dang stakes — the long view of the country you have spent four days in.

Trang Tien Plaza

📍 24 Hai Ba Trung

The colonial-era department store on Hoan Kiem's southeast corner, and the easiest air-conditioned last hour in the city. Trang Tien ice cream a few doors down is the local institution, not the mall.
