4-Day Osaka Itinerary: Universal Studios, Dotonbori & a Kobe Day Trip

Osaka Castle

📍 Chuo ward

Start on the keep's top floor while the morning air is still clear, then work down through the museum floors telling Hideyoshi's story — kids get the samurai-helmet try-on stand on the way. The moats and 600 cherry trees of the surrounding park deserve a slow lap afterwards.

Osaka Museum of History

📍 Across from the castle park

Full-scale recreations of the ancient Naniwa palace court, a walk-through Edo-era Osaka street in miniature, and a 10th-floor window that frames the castle perfectly — the best photograph of it in the city is from inside this museum.

Kuromon Ichiba Market

📍 Nipponbashi

Osaka's kitchen — about 150 stalls of grilled scallops, wagyu skewers, fugu, sushi and impossibly perfect fruit. Lunch here is a graze: pick a stall, eat standing, repeat until done.

Namba Yasaka Shrine

📍 Namba

A shrine built as a giant lion's head, mouth open twelve metres wide — it swallows bad luck and grants wins, which is why local sports teams pray here. Ten minutes' walk from the market and the single best photo stop in Namba.

Dotonbori

📍 Namba

The Glico running man, the giant mechanical crab, and takoyaki stands competing across the canal. Eat dinner standing — takoyaki first, kushikatsu after — then watch the neon come on from Ebisubashi bridge as the canal turns to colour.

Universal Studios Japan

📍 Konohana ward

Be at the gates 45 minutes before the official opening — USJ routinely opens early and the first hour decides your whole day. Check the app for timed-entry tickets to the area your family cares about most before you ride anything.

Super Nintendo World

📍 Inside USJ

Mario's world in built form — grab a Power-Up Band, punch the ? blocks, and ride Koopa's Challenge inside Bowser's castle. On busy days entry needs a free timed ticket from the USJ app, which is why this is the first stop.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

📍 Inside USJ

Hogsmeade under permanent snow, the castle walk-through, and a frozen butterbeer for the afternoon. The Forbidden Journey ride inside the castle is the park's best — single-rider line if the wait is long.

Universal CityWalk Osaka

📍 Between the park gates and the station

Dinner without leaving the bubble — floors of restaurants above the station approach, including a takoyaki museum food hall on the 4th floor where five famous Osaka stands sit side by side for one last comparison round.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

📍 Tempozan

One of the world's largest aquariums, built around a whale-shark tank eight storeys deep — the route spirals down alongside it, so you meet the same fish at different depths. Arrive at opening; school groups land mid-morning.

Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel

📍 Next to the aquarium

Fifteen minutes and 112 metres over Osaka Bay — on clear days you can pick out Awaji Island and the Akashi strait bridge. Queue for a see-through gondola if the line allows; there are only eight of them.

Santa Maria Cruise

📍 Pier beside Kaiyukan

A half-scale Columbus galleon doing 45-minute loops of the harbour from the pier beside the aquarium — the lazy, satisfying way to see the port, with the bay breeze doing the work.

Shinsekai

📍 Naniwa ward

Osaka's retro quarter — pachinko clatter, fugu lanterns, and the city's best kushikatsu. Order a round of skewers at Daruma and obey the one rule posted on every wall: no double-dipping in the communal sauce.

Tsutenkaku Tower

📍 Shinsekai

Shinsekai's Eiffel-flavoured centrepiece — rub the feet of Billiken, the 'god of things as they ought to be', on the observation deck, then watch the district's neon flicker on below you.

Kitano Ijinkan-gai

📍 Kitano, Kobe

The hillside district where Meiji-era foreign merchants built their mansions — the Weathercock House is the icon, and the lanes between the houses climb to quiet viewpoints over the city. Thirty minutes from Osaka on the Hanshin line.

Steakland Kobe

📍 Sannomiya, Kobe

The approachable way to eat certified Kobe beef — a teppanyaki counter where the chef cooks your set in front of you, at lunch prices roughly half the dinner ones. Join the queue by 11:45 or book a day ahead.

Meriken Park

📍 Kobe Harborland

Kobe's harbour park — the red Port Tower, the BE KOBE sign, and a preserved stretch of quay left exactly as the 1995 earthquake shattered it, which is worth five quiet minutes.

Kobe Anpanman Children's Museum

📍 Kobe Harborland

Harborland's big draw for the under-8s — a whole floor of Anpanman play worlds, plus the free mall level below with its character bakery. Travelling without small kids? Browse Harborland's waterfront mosaic mall instead.

Umeda Sky Building

📍 Umeda, Osaka

Back in Osaka for sunset — the Floating Garden Observatory's open-air ring sits 173 metres up, reached by a glass escalator suspended between the two towers. Time it for the moment the city's lights come on.
