Sapporo in Winter: Snow Festival, Otaru Lights & Asahiyama Zoo

Odori Park

📍 Chuo Ward, Sapporo

The Snow Festival's main site runs the length of Odori Park in early February — twelve blocks of carved snow, the big stages at the west end. Go in daylight first; you will come back for the lighting.

Sapporo TV Tower

📍 Odori, Chuo Ward

Straight up at the park's east end. The whole festival reads as one white ribbon from the observation deck — the only place the scale of it makes sense.

Sapporo Clock Tower

📍 Kita 1 Nishi 2, Chuo Ward

A wooden American-style hall from 1878, marooned among office blocks. Small, quick, and the clearest surviving piece of Hokkaido's frontier decade.

Susukino

📍 Susukino, Chuo Ward

The festival's ice sculptures sit on Ekimae-dori here — backlit, transparent, and completely different from the snow ones. Best after dark, which in February is 5pm.

Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho

📍 Susukino, Chuo Ward

Seventeen ramen counters in one alley. Miso ramen was invented in this city; order it with the corn and butter and stop apologising.

Nijo Market

📍 Minami 3 Higashi 1, Chuo Ward

Breakfast is a kaisendon — rice under sea urchin, salmon roe and crab. Hokkaido's seafood argument is made most cheaply at 8am.

Hokkaido Shrine

📍 Miyagaoka, Chuo Ward

Snow on the torii and almost nobody there. The approach through the trees is the point; in winter it is knee-deep and silent.

Maruyama Park

📍 Miyagaoka, Chuo Ward

The shrine's park, wrapped around it. Squirrels, deep snow, and a walk that takes as long as you let it.

Sapporo Beer Museum

📍 Kita 7 Higashi 9, Higashi Ward

Japan's only beer museum, in the original 1890 brick brewhouse. The tasting flight at the end is the reason to come; the Kaitakushi lager is brewed only here.

Mount Moiwa Ropeway

📍 Fushimi, Chuo Ward

Cable car then a mini cable car to the summit. One of Japan's three great night views, and the only one where you can see the sea ice edge on a clear night.

Otaru Sankaku Market

📍 Inaho, Otaru

Forty minutes on the rapid from Sapporo, and the market is a two-minute walk from the station. Small, loud, and the crab is cheaper than anything in the city.

Otaru Canal

📍 Minatomachi, Otaru

Gas lamps, stone warehouses, and in February the Snow Light Path floats candles down it. The postcard is real and it is better in snow.

Sakaimachi Street

📍 Sakaimachi, Otaru

The old merchant road: glassworks, music boxes, and a dozen places selling the same soft serve in minus five. Walk it end to end.

Otaru Music Box Museum

📍 Sumiyoshicho, Otaru

A converted 1912 warehouse with 25,000 music boxes and a steam clock outside that whistles on the hour.

Otaru Masazushi

📍 Hanazono, Otaru

Otaru's sushi street exists because the boats land here. Masazushi has been the benchmark since 1938 — book, or queue.

Asahiyama Zoo

📍 Higashiasahikawa, Asahikawa

Ninety minutes north by limited express, and worth the whole day for one thing: the penguin walk, twice daily in winter, when the king penguins are let out to march along a cleared path through the snow.

Asahikawa Ramen Village

📍 Nagayama, Asahikawa

Eight ramen shops under one roof. Asahikawa's style is soy-based with a lard film on top that keeps it scalding in minus fifteen — an engineering decision, not a garnish.

Otokoyama Sake Brewery Museum

📍 Nagayama, Asahikawa

Free tasting at the source, and the water is snowmelt off the Daisetsuzan range. The museum holds Edo-era brewing documents and the bottles that won in Monde Selection.

Asahibashi Bridge

📍 Asahibashi, Asahikawa

The Asahikawa Winter Festival builds its giant snow sculptures on the riverbank here in February — historically the largest ever made. Lit from 5pm.

Futami Suspension Bridge

📍 Jozankei, Minami Ward

A red bridge over the Toyohira gorge, an hour from central Sapporo. In winter the rock walls ice over and the river runs black underneath.

Jozankei Onsen

📍 Jozankei, Minami Ward

Sapporo's own hot spring town, in a valley of steam and snow. Day-use bathing at most ryokan without staying the night.

Hoheikyo Onsen

📍 Jozankei, Minami Ward

An outdoor bath ringed by cliffs, and — genuinely — the best Indian curry in Hokkaido, cooked by the resident chefs. Eat after bathing, not before.

Shiroi Koibito Park

📍 Miyanosawa, Nishi Ward

The chocolate factory behind Hokkaido's signature biscuit, done up as a mock-Tudor village. Kitsch, warm, and the last easy stop before the airport run.

Tanukikoji Shopping Street

📍 Minami 2-3 Nishi, Chuo Ward

A covered arcade seven blocks long — which in a Sapporo February is the entire appeal. Last souvenirs, out of the wind.
