Canal Cafe

Zenkokuji Temple

Akagi Shrine

The free answer to the paid observation decks: the 45th-floor South Observatory at 202m, with Fuji silhouetted at sunset on a clear day. No booking, no ticket — just arrive an hour before sundown and queue for the lift.

Shinjuku Golden Gai

Six alleys, two hundred bars, most seating fewer than eight people. Pick a counter with a sign in English (no cover charge marked), order two highballs and talk to the owner — the whole point is that you cannot do this anywhere else.

Nezu Shrine

📍 Nezu, Bunkyo City

Tokyo's prettiest shrine that tourists skip: a 1706 lacquered hall, a hillside of azalea terraces and a small tunnel of vermilion torii you can usually photograph with nobody in it — the kimono-photo spot without the Kyoto queue.

Kyu-Iwasaki-tei Gardens

📍 Ikenohata, Taito City

The Mitsubishi founder's 1896 mansion — a Josiah Conder-designed Western wing joined to a full Japanese residence. Wander both in house slippers; the parquet-and-tatami join is the most photographed corridor in east Tokyo.

Tokyo Skytree

📍 Oshiage, Sumida City

634m, and the Tembo Deck at 350m is the view worth paying for — Fuji on winter mornings, the whole Kanto plain the rest of the year. Book a timed ticket online to skip the queue, and eat in the Solamachi basement first.

Sumida River Walk

📍 Mukojima, Sumida City

The pedestrian deck slung under the Tobu rail bridge, opened in 2020 — cross from the Skytree side toward Asakusa at golden hour with trains rumbling overhead and the river traffic below.

Asakusa Hoppy Street

📍 Asakusa, Taito City

Two blocks of open-fronted izakaya west of the temple district, named for the beer-adjacent drink the post-war stalls poured. Share stewed beef tendon and a hoppy set at a street table — dinner is loud, cheap and unmistakably Tokyo.

teamLab Borderless

📍 Azabudai Hills, Minato City

The borderless flagship reopened at Azabudai Hills — artworks leave their rooms and wander the building, so no two visits run the same route. Book the first morning slot; by 11:00 the mirror rooms fill with tripods.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo

📍 Aobadai, Meguro City

A four-storey Kengo Kuma roastery on the Meguro River — copper cask, floor-to-ceiling glass over the canal, and a whisky-barrel-aged cold brew you cannot order in a normal branch. Come for the building as much as the coffee.

Daikanyama T-Site

📍 Sarugakucho, Shibuya City

Three low pavilions of books, vinyl and stationery threaded with garden paths — routinely called one of the world's most beautiful bookshops. The surrounding blocks are Tokyo's quietest designer-boutique neighbourhood; browse both.

Ebisu Garden Place

📍 Ebisu, Shibuya City

The red-brick plaza built on the old Yebisu brewery — a winter-date icon since the 90s. The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum sits on the square, and the 38th-floor corridor gives a free west-facing city view.

Tokyo City View

📍 Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, Minato City

The 52nd-floor observatory wraps 360 degrees around Mori Tower, with Tokyo Tower lit up in the foreground — the classic night-view composition. Time it for dusk so you get the blue hour and the full night skyline in one visit.

Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu

The cavernous izakaya that inspired the Kill Bill tea-house set — soba, robata skewers and a balcony over the great hall. Theatrical enough for a last-night dinner, relaxed enough to arrive in trainers. Book a balcony table.
